Home Brewing Supplies: The Brewing Kettle
Out of all of the beer making supplies you need, the brewing kettle is probably one of the most important items to spend as much as you can afford on. The brewing kettle is an integral part of the home brewing process because it is what you are going to use to brew your wort in. Your wort is where your initial beer taste comes from. So this means there are three things you don’t want to skimp on: the brewing kettle, the ingredients, and the water.
Out of all of the home brewing supplies why is the brewing kettle so important?
If you choose to buy a cheap brewing kettle or pick any kettle from your kitchen, the entire taste of your beer will change. First of all, the size is very important; you want to make sure you have a large enough brewing kettle to fit more than 5 gallons of liquid in. This is because most beer recipes will give you the ingredients to make a 5 gallon batch of home brew.
What is the difference between a stainless steel vs an aluminum brewing kettle
First of all, lets get rid of the myth that aluminum brewing kettles will get put a metallic taste in your beer. The fact is, aluminum reacts only to very high acidic levels in liquid, your wort will never reach the acidity level to react to the aluminum. Ok, so it won’t change the flavor of the wort, why pay more money for a stainless steel kettle? Well, since stainless steel brewing kettles can be cleaned by oxygenated/CIP cleaners without damaging the kettle, the kettleās passive oxide layer will be protected.
It is extremely important to sterilize your brewing kettle properly because the yeast is actually a live ingredient, and if there are other bacteria left in the kettle before you brew the wort, it could over take the yeast and ruin your entire batch.
